Name: Danny Whitehead
When did you join #TeamRoundheads? I joined the team on the first week in August
Did you have any experience playing rugby before? And what attracted you to rugby?
I have only had prior experience of rugby from Secondary school oh so many years ago… and I was actually forced into coming to rugby by my husband!
Why do you think there is a need for Inclusive Rugby?
All sports are getting better at tackling homophobia, transphobia, racism etc. And rugby is one of the best; however there are still times when a safe place for LGBT guys and allies are needed, where we can feel protected by each other.
What have you enjoyed the most about being a Roundhead and what is your favourite memory so far?
My best memory is the first training day oh so many months ago. I remember thinking “I ache so much, I’m so out of breath, I’m so unfit… but I love it!” My favourite part of the team is meeting all the other guys. I have a few gay friends but no one close who lives nearby. Now I feel like I have a new family.
What does being part of the Roundheads mean to you?
It means more than I thought it would. I’ve become fitter. I’ve lost 3 stone in 3 months. My confidence has gone through the roof. I genuinely love these guys more than I thought possible.
Finally, to anyone reading this who is thinking of joining with experience or no experience playing rugby, but who haven’t yet decided to #ruckwithus, what would you say to them?
Just do it. Just come down and meet the guys. Even if you don’t want to play the first time, come watch us. Come talk with us. We are a huge mix of people, from police to factory workers to teachers and we are all pretty damn awesome. You’ll love it more than you expect.
