When did you join #TeamRoundheads?

I have been there from the very start

Did you have any experience playing rugby before? And what attracted you to rugby?

None other than the dreaded games sessions at secondary school on the days when my mum wouldn’t write me a note! I became attracted after following lots of other lgbt+ rugby teams on social media. It all looked good fun and the teams appeared to have a great bond. Unfortunately there were no local teams, so when I saw the Hull Roundheads were planning on starting up I jumped at the chance.

Why do you think there is a need for Inclusive Rugby?

Sexism and homophobia still exists in a lot of mainstream sports. As The Hull Roundheads has proven there are a lot of lgbt+ people who want to take part in sport but are worried about doing so. Therefore having an inclusive rugby team creates that safe environment where everyone can enjoy the sport without the fear of being judged.

What have you enjoyed the most about being a Roundhead and what is your favourite memory so far?

Being able to take part in sport without being judged which is a far cry from my memories of sport at secondary school. It sounds a cliche but The Hull Roundheads have become my second family! My favourite memory has to be The Pride Ball where we all dressed up in our finery and had an amazing night. On the field my best memory would be seeing Ben Turnham tackle a guy twice his size with no effort at all!

What does being part of the Roundheads mean to you?

Acceptance, brotherhood and getting fit whilst having a laugh along the way! Also creating the best inclusive rugby team in the north!

Finally, to anyone reading this who is thinking of joining with experience or no experience playing rugby, but who haven’t yet decided to #ruckwithus, what would you say to them?

I know you are dying to come along but you are nervous, anxious and worried about taking that first step! All I would say is do it! Read the player profiles and you will see everyone felt the same, then look at the gallery and you will see no one regretted it! I promise we will make you feel welcome. There are plenty of social events where you will strengthen your friendships.
