Name: Ben France
When did you join #TeamRoundheads?
I was there at the very first meeting
Did you have any experience playing rugby before?
Never even held a rugby ball
And what attracted you to rugby?
In all honestly it wasn’t the rugby that attracted me but I have always wanted to try sports I just never felt comfortable. The idea of meeting new people was what really drew me in.
Why do you think there is a need for Inclusive Rugby?
100% yes, most of the current team had never ever played rugby and never felt comfortable doing so. We are all having fun playing now in an environment we feel comfortable. Without spaces like this for people who don’t fit neatly into traditional teams we would all be missing out on some fantastic experiences.
What have you enjoyed the most about being a Roundhead and what is your favourite memory so far?
Meeting so many different people from so many walks of like. It has been such a wonderful experience for me socially. I have also been so proud looking at how we have developed as a team and watching us all improve with the sport.
What does being part of the Roundheads mean to you?
So much more than I ever expected. I have made so many new friends and been able to connect with the LGBT+ community in Hull in a way I had never managed before. I feel more confident in myself and have made many friends, of course those experiences mean a lot to me.
Finally, to anyone reading this who is thinking of joining with experience or no experience playing rugby, but who haven’t yet decided to #ruckwithus, what would you say to them?
Go for it, I was terrified joining because I had 0 knowledge of the sport, I am overweight/unfit and historically terrible at sports. If I can go out on that pitch and have fun I promise you can too.
